Hi Groudheads

I am a gourd artist as well but I use Cayote Gourds that are found in the desert. They are very thin compared to bottle gourds and the usaual gourds used in crafting so they dry quickly in the desert heat but when working with them you must be careful not to inhale the dust from them. I will upload some pics for you to see soon.  Cayote gourds are a rouund gourd about the size of a softball.

I am so glad to find this thread again.  I want to ask about planting the gourds.  I have seeds for the dipper, birdhouse and a bushel basket gourd.  The dipper and birdhouse, I have planted before. BUT... In reading the seed pack on the bushel basket gourd, it says they are very big and the record weight is 165 pounds. I am going to plant them, however
should I put something under them to protect the from the ground.  The others I will raise on a fence. They will be hanging.  I am not sure what to do with this one.  Also, I want a gourd that is that shape, but not that big. Anyone know where to find them.  All help is appreciated.

love ya,
Deb

Hi,
I am a new member, and just happened to find this site on the web.  I  operate a store called " Out of My Gourd & More . . . "   and would you believe that GOURDS are my favorite canvas.  I mostly paint gourd, but also enjoy woodburning and cutting and carving.  I'm now concentrating on Fall & Halloween gourds, but will be starting Thanksgiving & Christmas soon.  I just never seem to have enough time.  Is anyone going to Ohio's Gourd Festival at the end of the month?

So glad to have found you!

Welcome Ginger...glad you 'found us' hehehe.  I'm not a grower or crafter when it comes to gourds...I just like to admire them...the finished project that is ; ).  You'll find alot of very talented gals here that are very into gourds.  Are you from Ohio or are you just going to the festival there?  Please visit the other areas of our site, maybe you'll find other areas that interest you as well.  Looking forward to getting to know more about you and having you stay amongst us, janel

WOW, this is really a blast from the past.!!

This must surely be the oldest thread on the boards. Lots of fun stories from the past.

There is probably more recent 'news' on 'dried gourds part 2'

Ginger, I would love to see pictures of your shop and your work.

I am a brand new Creative Home Arts member and love gourds.  But not being very creative I don't know what to do with the hundred that I have dried.  Please email me any suggestions or pictures you have.  I would be ever so grateful.  I hope this forum picks up again.

Hi,

I just became a member of Creative Home Arts Club and saw this thread. Although I haven't gone through it all, I would just like to chime in and let Pruss know that when I can find gourds I love to make Shekeres.  Shekeres are musical instruments that originated in Africa.

All you need (besides a gourd) are beads and string.

I taught myself how to make them but there are a couple of sites that tell you everything you need to know about gourds and making a Shekere. They are:

Welcome Sheryl...the shakere sites look like they have good information. I have never made those, I got some drum heads from Arizona gourds, to make some drums, but haven't done it yet. I have used beads to embellish other methods, around the rim of a gourd with pine needles and around a dreamcatcher on gourds. lots of fun.

Enjoy CHAC, there are neat people here!

BTW, there is another gourd site somewhere on here...I'll see if I can find it. It is great to have more gourdiacs on here!!

There are some pictures of my gourds in my  photo bucket...I think my next project is going to make table favors for doll club next month. I think just use the little round gourds to make pumpkin place cards.

Hi even tho I have been a member for years just found this site.  I have made several gourd projects  birdhouses and beaded bowls.  Just bought a wood burning kit, but during my recent move my dried gourds were crushed.  Now on  the hunt for some new ones.  If anyone has a site to order from I would love to hear from you.  Thanks so much  Karen

Gmalil,

Thank you for the welcome.

I'm still trying to get used to this site. I am normally a beader and on sites like beadandbutton.com when you post something you get emails whenever the same post has been responded to. I guess I'll have to get used to checking this site everyday.

There is one website that the gourders out there might like. http://www.summerbird.org/ This woman paints on and beads gourds. She even has a gourd doll. She also has a book out called "Those Gourdgeous Beads" that I have and am just waiting to see if we can actually get some gourds out of next year's crop. It was raining so much here in New England this year that the gourd plants drowned.

Karen,

The last time I bought Gourds I got them from ebay. A lot of the websites I visiited in the past were for wholesalers. They would not only sell a few to a customer.

Sheryl, I can help you.  If you run back to the top of this page, you'll find a tiny white envelope on the right.  Click on it and you can subscribe to posts---either just the replies to you or to all of them.  I subscribe to them all and find I don't have to check into the forums very much.  Just for the one's I want to reply to or if don't understand the meaning because they're out of context.  By subscribing to all posts, I think it keeps me more informed about what's going on here---even tho I don't always reply.  I find it sooooo much easier to read and delete instead of signing in each time.

Also, you can just punch the purple "Community" button at the top and scroll down to the list of most popular posts.  There's a button beside it that will give you the most recent posts.  I use that a lot too.

And welcome to our group.  I hope to see you here often.

You're welcome, Sheryl.  I suppose you really ought to set up a Photobucket so you can post photos in it.  It's one of the things we appreciate most around here---seeing what you're doing.

I wish there were a list of instructions/hints for finding your way around here.  Most sites don't tell you anything so it's pretty much a "hit and miss" system.  I've mostly wandered about, punching buttons to see what they're for.  Occasionally, I hit on something (Like the "recent topics" button) and say "Oh, yeah! This is so much easier.  Why didn't I find it sooner?".

I think the "Subscriber", "PM" and "Recent Topics" buttons are some of the most overlooked ones.

Some "Please Don'ts" would nice too.  LIke "Please don't post your personal e-mail address on the forums for all the world to see."

Do they tend to forget that we're not all experts here?

Hi, Nicky.  It's great to see you here again.  I've been off and on---more reading than posting.  I don't know which trip you mean???  Wisconsin?  We were gone 3 days right after Judy & Boop were here.  That was for a RV rally meeting.  The rally isn't until next year but Bill's involved and I guess I will be too.  If you mean the big one where Dena & I are going to Asia, that isn't until Dec 26.  I go on Tuesday to get the final Japanese Encephalitis vaccine.  Ouch!  That will finally be the last one.  I just had one Friday too.  Ouch again! There have been a bunch of them.
