Dove Ornament
Create a symbol of peace

Sew a rich brown and blue dove for a gift or your own tree.

Finished size:  Approx. 8" long Ornament

You will need: 
•  9" x 18" blue wool felt*
•  9" x 18" piece of brown wool felt*
•  Floss skeins: 1 blue, 1 brown
•  1 oz. polyester stuffing
•  Three 8mm bells, silver, copper
•  Sewing machine
•  Embroidery needle
•  Fabric glue*
Iron & board, pencil, pins, scissors, tape measure

•  Allow glue to dry between steps.

STEP 1: Cut fabric. Cut dove ornament front and back from blue felt. Cut four wing pieces from brown. Cut three 1" x 6" strips each from blue and brown. Cut one heart back from brown.

STEP 2: Stitch appliqués. Use six strands of brown floss to embroider dove eyes with French knot, and tail with straight stitches. Use six strands of blue floss to embroider snowflake in center of each outer wing piece. 

STEP 3: Sew ornament. Place right sides of dove pieces together and pin in place. Sew completely around with 1/4" seam. Clip curves. Cut a 1 1/2" slit through one layer only where wing will be placed. Turn bird right side out. Stuff bird and stitch opening shut. Cut 1" slit in the inner wing pieces. Pin wing pieces together with right sides out. Blanket stitch around both wings. Stuff wings, sew opening shut, and glue in place.

STEP 4: Make heart. Weave blue and brown strips together with blue strip in center (see example). Cut 1" slit in center of brown heart back. Center heart back on woven strips. Pin in place. Topstitch a 1/4" seam around heart. Trim woven strips even with heart back. Stuff heart and stitch opening shut. Use six strands of brown floss to embroider “Joy” on front center square.

STEP 5: Finish. Cut 24" piece of brown floss or cotton, knot. Thread on three bells. Push needle up through heart. Knot 3" above heart. Push needle up through dove and tie loop in top at chosen length.

The pattern for the dove and heart are on page 60 of the November/December 2009 issue, the same pattern for the dove tree skirt & stocking.

So are you saying you must purchase the magazine to get the pattern? I read in their chat forum that it's supposed to be shown in pdf file but I sure don't see that option.

Christmas Ornament Idea 

You can by plain inexpensive picture frames. Decorate the outer edges with beads, colored paper ect. and insert picture. The picture could be of the family member or of a holiday figure. Tie ribbon to the place on the back that was made for holding the picture up and presto!
